The Abilene Zoo is a place of learning and adventure, where families make memories, share the joy of discovery and become inspired to preserve wildlife.
As a non-profit organization, we rely on our guests, members and generous supporters, to provide world-class care to our animal family and to continue conservation work throughout the Big Country and around the world.

East African crowned cranes are our first endangered species (IUCN) highlight! This species is suffering from habitat loss due to the removal of swamp land for agricultural purposes. Crowned cranes are actually known for their unique movements. They’re often found bobbing their heads, fluttering their wings and leaping around. They are also the only species of crane that has a back toe for ease with perching.
These birds typically live to be in their 20`s! Abilene Zoo’s crowned cranes are turning 17 and 12 this year. If you’d like to see an East African crowned crane in person, you can see Norbert and Theodore in our multi-species yard next to our giraffe terrace!
Research done through Denver Zoo and San Francisco Zoo ...
