The Elk Country Animal Shelter formed in November 2002, working as a group to raise funds to build and operate a compassionate animal shelter for the community of Montmorency County, Michigan. After six years of planning and grassroot fundraising, we have our 501 (c)3 status and are in the new shelter. We walked all the dogs housed at the sheriff's department to their new indoor kennels on March 31, 2009. Homeless dogs and cats in our area are clean and warm until they find forever homes. Our group's focus is spay and neuter along with humane education, providing programs for both in our community.
