A Dog Protection Act that requires police officers to be taught humane ways to deal with pets became law in Colorado on Monday. It is the first law of its kind in the United States. Dubbed the "Don't Shoot My Dog" bill, the legislation was passed unanimously last month by the state senate. It calls for the creation of a Dog Protection Act that will require training programs to teach law enforcement officers about canine behavior and non-lethal ways to control dogs. Officers will have to follow specific policies and procedures when they go to homes with dogs. In non-violent situations, pet parents will be given the option to put their dogs outside or into another room before officers enter their homes. "The idea here is to keep officers and animals safe," said Gov. John Hickenlooper as he signed the bill into law, according to the Associated Press.
